Drivers of Northward Expansion

The lone star tick’s historical range in the 1750s covered much of the eastern U.S., but it receded as forested land and white-tailed deer populations decreased [2]. Since the 1940s, conservation efforts have allowed deer populations to rebound, enabling the tick to repopulate its historical range and push further north [2].

Scientific studies and surveillance indicate that the lone star tick’s range is expanding northward into the Upper Midwest at a rate of 35 to 55 kilometers per year [7]. This expansion is primarily driven by:

Proper Tick Removal

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible [1].
  • Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist or jerk the tick, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin [1].
  • After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water [1].
  • Dispose of a live tick by putting it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Alternatively, save it in a sealed container for identification by public health authorities [1].
