If it feels like there are more ticks now than when you were a kid, you are not imagining things. The data backs you up. Across the United States, tick populations are exploding, their geographic ranges are expanding, and the rates of tick-borne diseases are climbing at an alarming pace.
According to the CDC, reported cases of Lyme disease have doubled over the last two decades, and new, emerging threats like the Powassan virus and Alpha-gal syndrome are making headlines. So, what is driving this surge? The answer is a complex mix of environmental changes, but one factor stands above the rest: a changing climate.
Shorter Winters, Longer Tick Seasons
Ticks are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity. Historically, long, deep freezes in the northern United States served as a natural population control, killing off a significant portion of overwintering ticks and keeping the “tick season” relatively short.
That is no longer the case. As average winter temperatures rise, fewer ticks die off during the cold months. More importantly, the active tick season is expanding. Ticks become active whenever the temperature rises above freezing. With earlier springs and later, milder autumns, ticks have a much longer window to feed, reproduce, and transmit diseases [1]. In states like Minnesota and Wisconsin, it is now common to find active deer ticks in November and March.
Expanding Geographic Ranges
Ticks are marching northward. Species that were once confined to the southern and mid-Atlantic states are now thriving in the Northeast, the upper Midwest, and Canada.
The Lone Star tick, for example, was historically found primarily in the southeastern United States. Today, it is firmly established as far north as Maine and as far west as Nebraska. This expansion brings new diseases to populations that have never had to deal with them before, such as the meat allergy associated with Alpha-gal syndrome.
Similarly, the blacklegged (deer) tick has dramatically expanded its range, pushing Lyme disease into new counties and states every year.
The Role of Reforestation and Suburban Sprawl
Climate is not the only factor. Changes in land use have created the perfect storm for tick proliferation.
Over the last century, much of the eastern United States has experienced significant reforestation as abandoned farmland returned to woods. At the same time, suburban development has pushed deeper into these wooded areas. This creates a highly fragmented landscape, a patchwork of lawns, woods, and brush.
This fragmented landscape is the ideal habitat for the white-footed mouse, the primary reservoir for the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. Without large predators to keep their numbers in check, mouse populations thrive in suburban edges. Ticks feed on these infected mice, become carriers of the disease, and then drop off in the exact areas where humans live and play.
Adapting to the New Normal
The reality is that the tick problem is not going away; it is getting worse. We can no longer treat tick prevention as an afterthought or a seasonal chore. It must become a year-round habit.
